The Bastar food experiences that stood out during my Jagdalpur visit

Date:

Food turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my trip to Jagdalpur, and that is the magic of Bastar. The tribal heritage of the place is present in the food being served, with a heavy reliance on forest ingredients, rice, and whatever is in season. It did not feel like a culinary act, but a regular meal catered to the visitors.

First taste of Bastar’s forest ingredients

I had my first meal at a diner near Dalpat Sagar Chowpatty, where I tried bamboo shoot curry out of curiosity. I had never eaten bamboo made like this before, where it was cut into thin slices and cooked. The woman who runs the bistro explained that bamboo was being harvested in certain months, which clarified why I felt this meal was somehow related to my visit.

Aamat came as a tangy vegetable curry that I would later discover changes with the availability of vegetables in the region. I had mine made from gourds and greens, with a definite sourness I could not place.

Small snacks that shaped my Jagdalpur days

Between longer meals, I kept returning to smaller snacks scattered around town. Bafauri became a regular stop, steamed rather than fried, made from chana dal and light enough to eat mid-afternoon without feeling weighed down. I found a vendor near the market who steamed a fresh batch every few hours, and I timed a few of my walks specifically to catch it hot.

Chousela showed up alongside most meals: simple rice flour chapatis that worked as a steady base for whatever curry accompanied them. Nothing about it stood out on its own, but it grounded every meal I had in Bastar, the kind of food you stop noticing until it is missing.

Sweet dishes and market finds in Jagdalpur

Petha was not something I was used to, and it was made from ash gourd. It was light, less syrupy, and had a very interesting taste. I bought some from a stall near the local haat, where the vendor informed me that the local version was less sweet compared to those from the northern part of the country.

At a food stall recommended by my hotel, I also tried tikhur, a starch-based sweet unique to the region, mild and slightly cooling, the kind of dish that felt comforting after a long, hot afternoon out at the falls.

A Bastar meal built around local specialities

The last supper, created in a small restaurant, was a fixed course made of famous Bastar cuisines, with farra being one of them. Just like momos, farra is a rice flour dumpling. Along with farra, there was salebhaji made of leafy greens foraged from the nearby forests that had been cooked plainly using a few spices so that the taste of the greens could be kept intact.

It felt like the most complete introduction to the region’s food that I had gotten all trip, everything on the plate tracing back to the forest and fields around Jagdalpur rather than anything imported or generic.

Booking a hotel with Bastar’s food experiences in mind

If Bastar’s food is part of what draws you here, it is worth checking ahead when you book a hotel, since a few properties around Jagdalpur build in tribal food experiences or arrange visits to weekly haats where these dishes are prepared fresh. Staying somewhere that offers this saved me from having to search for every meal on my own, particularly on days when I was too tired from waterfall visits to hunt down a specific dish.

What Bastar’s food left me with

In retrospect, the food served in Jagdalpur seemed to tell me more about the region than the scenic beauty did. Every dish, such as bamboo shoots, leafy greens, or farra, had interesting information on how people consumed food in this region based on what nature gave them.
